DOVER BEACH<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sea is calm tonight.<\/p>\n

The tide is full, the moon lies fair<\/p>\n

Upon the straits; on the French coast the light<\/p>\n

Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,<\/p>\n

Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.<\/p>\n

Come to the window, sweet is the night air!<\/p>\n

Only, from the long line of spray<\/p>\n

Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,<\/p>\n

Listen! you hear the grating roar<\/p>\n

Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,<\/p>\n

At their return, up the high strand,<\/p>\n

Begin, and cease, and then again begin,<\/p>\n

With tremulous cadence slow, and bring<\/p>\n

The eternal note of sadness in.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sophocles long ago<\/p>\n

Heard it on the Aegean, and it brought<\/p>\n

Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow<\/p>\n

Of human misery; we<\/p>\n

Find also in the sound a thought,<\/p>\n

Hearing it by this distant northern sea.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Sea of Faith<\/p>\n

Was once, too, at the full, and round earth’s shore<\/p>\n

Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.<\/p>\n

But now I only hear<\/p>\n

Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,<\/p>\n

Retreating, to the breath<\/p>\n

Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear<\/p>\n

And naked shingles of the world.<\/p>\n

Ah, love, let us be true<\/p>\n

To one another!\u00a0 for the world, which seems<\/p>\n

To lie before us like a land of dreams,<\/p>\n

So various, so beautiful, so new,<\/p>\n

Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,<\/p>\n

Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;<\/p>\n

And we are here as on a darkling plain<\/p>\n

Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,<\/p>\n

Where ignorant armies clash by night.<\/p>\n
